It is the goal of Metropolitan Chess, Inc. to promote and support the game of chess through community outreach and local, national, and international partnerships. We also aim to increase awareness of the educational value of chess, and ultimately provide greater opportunities for chess players of all strengths in which to learn, develop and grow. To this aim, we run regular GM/IM norm tournaments, instructional seminars, group camps, and are developing instructional chess software and mobile applications.

What are GM/IM norms?

A norm in chess is one of the requirements to receive a title such as Grandmaster/International Master from FIDE (World Chess Federation).

How we came to be?

After viewing IM John Donaldson's Chess Life Online article which was posted shortly after the end of the 2010 Olympiad, I was moved to attempt to start a norm series on the west coast. I felt such tournaments would afford United States players greater opportunities at GM/IM norms and be able to ultimately produce more GM/IM's in the United States. In that vein, I approached a local tournament director, and after a long discussion together and a week of planning, the Metropolitan Chess FIDE Invitational series was born.

Agata and I would like to thank you for the opportunity to participate in the Metropolitan chess camp and be taught by WCC GM Anand. She will keep memories about it for the rest of her life.Rita Makogon, Mother of Agata Bykovtsev
Things continued to go my way and I finished with a hefty 7.5/9 and took home a dazzling trophy. Many thanks to Ankit for all his efforts in putting together this …[1st Metropolitan Chess International] excellent event and I wish him the best of luck with his plans for the future.Michael Adams, International Grandmaster
Ankit Gupta treated guests to what would have to rank as the best ‘Chess Dinner’ I have had the pleasure of attending at Providence in Hollywood. We were lavished with a 6 course tasting menus with matched wines.Tara MacGowran, wife of International Grandmaster Michael Adams
Hopefully you will organize more events like this one …[1st Metropolitan Chess International], the extra prizes and the Swarovski trophy were the cream on the cake.Loek Van Wely, International Grandmaster
The hotel [Terranea] is breath-taking and the oceanfront Casita is absolutely fantastic. Look forward to seeing you on 9th.Aruna Anand, Wife of World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand
I think you ran a great tournament, I really enjoyed playing in it. The location, hotel, playing hall, early pairings, availability of concessions by the playing hall, provided sets/clocks, the strength of the players in the tournament, and availability of multiple tournament directors were all great. You also went above and beyond with the dinner, which was an excellent experience as well.Eugene Yanayt, FIDE Master
The chess camp was phenomenal. Vishy Anand was a very special instructor and the kids were mesmerized... they sat there paying total attention...and every word he said they were taking in. It was awesome for these kids to get a chance to meet Vishy and also for me to do the same. It was a wonderful experience overall.Robert Hess, International Grandmaster
Ankit has provided more norm opportunities for West Coast norm seekers in the last year than they have had in the previous decade. This statement is not an exaggeration. Most of his events are organized on a shoestring and yet the playing conditions he offers are superior to many similar tournaments.John Donaldson, Captain of the United States Olympiad Team
Nico really enjoyed the program. Thanks for arranging it and allowing Nico to participate. Nico tells me that it was the best camp he has ever gone to and that it has really helped him a great deal. He recently crossed the 2100 rating threshold and his playing style has evolved positively. He even got lucky and placed first in the U2200 Open Section of the New York State Championship. He tells me he believes your camp made all the difference. Please keep us informed about your future plans.Nicholas Checa, Father of Nica Checa
