FAQ’s
Why so many instructors?
We have a team of seven instructors over 6 groups, because the top groups have assistant instructors paired with the main instructor to ensure that the instruction is executed in as smooth a fashion as possible.
What makes us different than other chess camps?
We gear and modify instruction based on every additional student added. Research is done on past student results, performances, and problem areas, to gear lessons towards improvement. Instructors and organizers keep in constant contact to ensure the instruction is geared to match the needs of every group. All material from every group is personally approved and vetted by the organizers.
Our instructors are required to present material that is substantively different than material they use for instruction outside of this camp. More so, the material is not prepared from simply other instructional books – the material is unique to this camp and this year’s edition. Material will not be reâ€used from a previous year’s camp.
How is group placement decided?
Your USCF rating (and FIDE rating if you have one) play a factor. Moreover, your peak rating is also used to make a final decision. The group rating distribution above is a rough idea of each group student to a different section if we feel they are more suited for a higher section, etc. Consideration is also given to a student’s recent tournament performances and level of performance at other Metropolitan Chess, Inc. workshops/camps if such history exists.
Can my son/daughter attend only the some days of the camp (i.e. Saturday/Sunday)?
It is possible to have your son/daughter attend only some days of the camp, however seating for select days is limited and fills up more quickly. Because we intend to keep a max fixed number of students per section on any given day, if a certain day fills up to that quota, then seating will be closed.
Are there financial aid opportunities?
There are a number of financial aid opportunities for youth players from underprivileged families who would like to attend. Please contact us for options that may fit your needs. Based on seating availability and case-by-case basis.
Is Lunch Provided Daily?
Yes, lunch is provided daily. A set selection for daily lunch will be determined shortly after registration. You will be contacted specifically such that the lunch meets all dietary constraints and/or food allergies that attendee may have
